About the illy Logo
Introduction
A white brushstroke signature floating in a red square — the illy logo is a piece of pop art that happens to sell espresso. Few food brands anywhere carry a mark designed by a famous artist; fewer still have kept it untouched for three decades.
Brand Overview
illy (illycaffè S.p.A.) is an Italian espresso company founded in Trieste in 1933 by Francesco Illy, the inventor who patented the first automatic espresso machine (the “illetta”, 1935) and pioneered pressurised, oxygen-free coffee packaging. Headquartered in the port city of Trieste, illy sells a single, celebrated blend of nine Arabica beans in its silver-and-red cans, and runs cafés in museums, airports, and shopping streets worldwide. Its official website is illy.com.
History of the illy Logo
For most of its life illy used conventional typographic marks. In 1996 the company commissioned American pop artist James Rosenquist — who had painted the brand’s imagery before — to design a new logo. He drew the founder’s name as a loose white brush script and set it inside a saturated red square. The result blurred advertising and art so completely that the square became a gallery piece in its own right, and it has fronted every can, cup, and café since, unchanged.
Meaning of the Logo
- The red square: Both a canvas and a coffee tin seen head-on — the artwork and the packaging are the same object.
- The brush script: A hand-painted signature, keeping a family founder’s name — and an artist’s gesture — on every product.
- The single colour: One red, everywhere. illy’s discipline makes the square recognisable across a street, no reading required.
illy Logo Colors
| Color | Hex Code | Usage |
|---|---|---|
| illy Red | #D9261C | The square field (sampled from the logo artwork) |
| White | #FFFFFF | The brush-script wordmark within the square |
The red square is the logo itself, not a background — in the transparent PNG the artwork fills its square exactly as the brand uses it.
Conclusion
illy’s logo is a signature on a red canvas: part trademark, part artwork, entirely unmistakable.
