About Nike
Nike, Inc. is an American multinational sportswear company and the largest athletic footwear and apparel maker in the world. It was founded on January 25, 1964, as Blue Ribbon Sports by University of Oregon track coach Bill Bowerman and his former runner Phil Knight, initially acting as a distributor of Japanese Onitsuka Tiger running shoes. The company renamed itself Nike, Inc. on May 30, 1971, and is headquartered in Beaverton, Oregon. Today Nike designs and sells footwear, apparel, and equipment across running, basketball, football, and dozens of other sports.
Logo Meaning and History
The famous Swoosh was designed in 1971 by Carolyn Davidson, a graphic design student at Portland State University, where Phil Knight was teaching accounting. Knight’s only brief was that the mark should convey movement, and Davidson’s wing-like design was inspired by the Greek goddess of victory, Nike of Samothrace. Knight paid her $35 for the design, famously remarking that he did not love it but that it would grow on him. In 1983, Knight thanked her with a gold Swoosh ring and Nike stock.
Evolution
- 1971 — The original Swoosh debuts alongside an orange “NIKE” wordmark when the company takes the Nike name.
- 1978 — The logo is refined: a sleeker Swoosh paired with “NIKE” set in Futura Bold Condensed.
- 1988 — The “Just Do It” slogan is launched and appears alongside the Swoosh, forming the core of Nike’s brand identity.
- 1995 — The word “Nike” is dropped from the logo; the Swoosh stands alone and becomes one of the most recognizable marks in the world.
Colors and Font
The Swoosh is most commonly rendered in solid black (#000000) or white, working on any background. Nike’s signature accent is Nike Orange (#FF4F00, Pantone 165 C), a nod to the orange wordmark of the original 1971 logo. The classic wordmark was set in Futura Bold Condensed, and Nike’s current corporate typography is a customized cut called Nike Futura Condensed.
