Mastercard is an American multinational payment-processing corporation and one of the world’s largest card networks. It traces back to 1966, when Karl H. Hinke, an executive at Marine Midland Bank, brought several banks together in Buffalo, New York, to form the Interbank Card Association as a rival to BankAmericard. The card brand became Master Charge in 1969 and was renamed MasterCard in 1979.

Evolution of the Mastercard Logo

• 1969: The two overlapping circles debuted with the Master Charge brand, combining the Western States Bankcard Association’s circles with the Master Charge name.
• 1979: Renamed MasterCard; the wordmark appeared in bold white capitals against a black rectangle over the circles.
• 1990: The design was refined with brighter colors and a more contemporary typeface.
• 1996: A bolder wordmark with a black outline and the signature horizontal stripe pattern in the overlap.
• 2016: Pentagram’s Michael Bierut and Luke Hayman simplified the mark back to flat circles with the name set below in FF Mark.
• 2019: The wordmark was dropped entirely, leaving the standalone symbol.
