Brand Overview
Komatsu Ltd. is a Japanese multinational that manufactures construction, mining and forestry machinery, along with industrial presses and military equipment. Founded in 1921 in the city of Komatsu, Ishikawa, it is the world’s second-largest maker of construction equipment after Caterpillar, famous for its dump trucks, excavators and bulldozers — and for some of the largest mining machines ever built.

History of the Komatsu Logo
Komatsu began as the machinery division of Takeuchi Mining Industry in 1917 and became an independent company in 1921, taking its name from its home city — “komatsu” means “little pine tree”. The current wordmark, with its extra-bold rounded letters and the raised crossbar of the T, was standardised in the late twentieth century and has carried the brand’s global expansion ever since.
Meaning of the Komatsu Logo
- The raised T: the lifted letter breaks the line like a machine rising over a ridge — the logo’s one deliberate irregularity, and its most remembered detail.
- The heavy letters: drawn at the weight of the machines themselves; nothing about the mark is delicate.
- Komatsu blue: a deep industrial blue that holds its own against the yellow paint of the equipment it brands.

Conclusion
Six heavy letters and one raised T: the Komatsu logo is built, deliberately, like the machines it names.
