History of the JR East Logo
JR East was established on 1 April 1987, when Japanese National Railways was split into seven regional companies. All of them adopted the same bold italic JR lettermark, differentiated by colour: JR East took a fresh green, which has identified its trains, stations and signage across eastern Japan ever since. The current JR East logo presented on this page is the official mark in use today, kept in its original colors and proportions.
Meaning of the JR East Logo
- The shared JR lettermark signals membership of the Japan Railways Group, formed from the old national railway in 1987.
- The forward-leaning, connected letterforms suggest speed, momentum and a network in constant motion.
- The green colour is JR East’s own identity colour, associated with the green landscapes of northern Japan and with freshness and reliability.
