SBB Overview
SBB (Schweizerische Bundesbahnen, Swiss Federal Railways) is Switzerland’s national railway company, famous for the country’s densely integrated, clockface timetable and for carrying over a million passengers every day.
- Introduced: 1902
- Founder / Formed by: Swiss Confederation (nationalisation of the major private railways)
- Headquarters: Bern, Switzerland
- Industry: Rail transport
- Website: sbb.ch
History of the SBB Logo
SBB was founded in 1902 as Switzerland nationalised its main private railway companies. The SBB CFF FFS name presents the company in three of Switzerland’s national languages (German, French and Italian). The red lozenge bearing a white double-headed arrow, introduced in the early 1970s, pairs with the trilingual wordmark and has become one of the most recognisable railway identities in the world. The current SBB logo presented on this page is the official mark in use today, kept in its original colors and proportions.
Meaning of the SBB Logo
- The white double-headed arrow on red represents movement in both directions and the precision of the Swiss timetable.
- The red field echoes the Swiss flag, underlining SBB’s role as the national railway.
- Presenting the name as SBB CFF FFS reflects Switzerland’s multilingual character and the company’s service to every language region.
