ÖBB Overview
ÖBB (Österreichische Bundesbahnen, Austrian Federal Railways) is Austria’s national railway company and one of Europe’s largest transport groups, operating passenger services such as Railjet and Nightjet, rail freight through Rail Cargo Group, and infrastructure across Austria.
- Introduced: 1923
- Founder / Formed by: Republic of Austria (state-owned railway)
- Headquarters: Vienna, Austria
- Industry: Rail transport
- Website: oebb.at
History of the ÖBB Logo
ÖBB traces its origins to 1923, when Austria’s state railway was established as an independent company, taking the name Österreichische Bundesbahnen (ÖBB) in 1947. Its best-known historic mark was the winged “Pflatsch” symbol used from 1974, which was replaced in 1998 by the clean red ÖBB wordmark, whose stylised Ö is formed by a circle cut by a diagonal stroke. The current ÖBB logo presented on this page is the official mark in use today, kept in its original colors and proportions.
Meaning of the ÖBB Logo
- The bold red wordmark signals energy, speed and the national colour of Austria.
- The stylised Ö, a circle pierced by a diagonal stroke, suggests a wheel, a signal and forward motion in one simple gesture.
- The strong, rounded letterforms were designed for instant recognition on trains, stations and tickets across the country.
