Brand Overview

Yanmar Holdings is a Japanese manufacturer of diesel engines, agricultural machinery, construction equipment, energy systems and marine propulsion, founded in Osaka in 1912 by Magokichi Yamaoka. Yanmar built the world’s first commercially viable small diesel engine in 1933, and its red Y now marks everything from rice transplanters to superyacht engines.

History of the Yanmar Logo

The name Yanmar blends the founder’s surname with the Yanma dragonfly, a symbol of good harvests in Japan. For the company’s centenary in 2012 it adopted a new brand mark: the “Flying Y”, a sharp red double-chevron that is both the letter Y and a wing in motion. The mark rolled out across the group from 2013, replacing plainer lettering with a symbol of the next century.

Meaning of the Yanmar Logo

  • The Flying Y: two stacked chevrons form the initial and a wing — lift, speed and a harvest dragonfly abstracted into one sign.
  • The forward italics: the name leans into motion, matching the symbol’s upward cut.
  • Yanmar red: a single decisive red — harvest luck and engineering confidence in one colour.

Conclusion

A wing, a letter and a dragonfly in two red strokes: the Yanmar logo is the neatest symbol in Japanese industry.
