Brand Overview

Oreo was introduced in 1912 by the National Biscuit Company (Nabisco) in New York City, first sold from a bakery in Manhattan’s Chelsea district. The chocolate sandwich cookie with its embossed design and creme filling went on to become the best-selling cookie brand in the world, sold in more than 100 countries, and is today owned by Mondelez International.

History of the Oreo Logo

The Oreo name and the ornate cookie embossing date to the original 1912 design, but the wordmark readers know today — chunky white letters with a two-tone blue outline and drop shadow — was standardised in the brand’s late-20th-century packaging and refreshed in small steps since. The lettering mimics the round, stamped look of the cookie itself.

Meaning of the Oreo Logo

• The bubble letters: rounded, inflated letterforms echo the shape of the sandwich cookie and its stamped surface.
• The two blues: a deep cookie blue with a sky-blue shadow keeps the pack unmistakable on the biscuit aisle.
• The white fill: the colour of the famous creme filling, set against the dark biscuit tones of the packaging.
