NS Overview
NS (Nederlandse Spoorwegen) is the principal passenger railway operator in the Netherlands, running the Dutch national rail network’s intercity and Sprinter services used by more than a million travellers a day.
- Introduced: 1938
- Founder / Formed by: Dutch state (merger of the HSM and SS railway companies)
- Headquarters: Utrecht, Netherlands
- Industry: Rail transport
- Website: ns.nl
History of the NS Logo
NS was formed in 1938 by merging the Netherlands’ two largest railway companies into a single state-owned operator. Its famous blue logo, a pair of opposing arrows flowing into one another, was designed by Gert Dumbar’s Tel Design studio in 1968 and remains a textbook example of Dutch modernist design, still carried on every NS train today. The current NS logo presented on this page is the official mark in use today, kept in its original colors and proportions.
Meaning of the NS Logo
- The two opposing arrows express trains travelling in both directions on one connected network.
- The flowing white stripes cut through the blue form like rails and points switching traffic smoothly.
- The deep NS blue stands for reliability, clarity and the no-nonsense efficiency of Dutch public transport.
