History of the Norfolk Southern Logo
Norfolk Southern began operations on 1 June 1982, combining the Norfolk and Western and Southern railways. It launched with a thoroughbred horse identity — the famous horsehead mark, drawn from a galloping thoroughbred — which expressed the speed and reliability of its ‘Thoroughbred Service’ and remains the core of its black corporate livery today. The current Norfolk Southern logo presented on this page is the official mark in use today, kept in its original colors and proportions.
Meaning of the Norfolk Southern Logo
- The galloping thoroughbred horsehead stands for speed, power and the company’s ‘Thoroughbred Service’ promise.
- The italic NORFOLK SOUTHERN lettering leans forward, reinforcing the sense of motion in the horse mark.
- The strict black artwork is one of the most recognisable liveries in American railroading, applied across the entire locomotive fleet.
