Brand Overview
Listerine is an American brand of antiseptic mouthwash, promoted with the slogan ‘Kills germs that cause bad breath’. It was developed in 1879 in St. Louis, Missouri, by chemist Joseph Lawrence and named after Joseph Lister, the pioneer of antiseptic surgery. Marketed for decades by Warner-Lambert and then Pfizer, it has been distributed by Johnson & Johnson’s consumer health business (now Kenvue) since 2006.

History of the Listerine Logo
Listerine began as a surgical antiseptic before becoming the first over-the-counter mouthwash. Its label lettering stayed proudly medicinal, and the current logo distils that heritage into stacked, slab-like black capitals — a wordmark that looks like it was stamped by a pharmacist, not drawn by a designer.
Meaning of the Listerine Logo
- The block capitals: heavy, squared letterforms signal antiseptic strength and clinical seriousness.
- The black master: plain black type echoes the brand’s 19th-century apothecary labels.
- The name itself: borrowing Joseph Lister’s surname lends the product borrowed scientific authority — a promise of germ-killing power.

Conclusion
The Listerine wordmark is deliberately stern: big black capitals that promise a mouthwash with real bite, unchanged in spirit since 1879.
