Canadian National Overview
Canadian National, known simply as CN, is Canada’s largest railway and a North American Class I freight railroad, with a network of roughly 18,600 miles reaching the Atlantic, Pacific and Gulf coasts. Created by the Canadian government in 1919, it was privatised in 1995 and now serves shippers across Canada, the US Midwest and the Gulf of Mexico.
- Introduced: 1919
- Founder / Formed by: The Government of Canada, by amalgamating the Canadian Northern, Grand Trunk and other insolvent railways
- Headquarters: Montreal, Quebec, Canada
- Industry: Rail transport (freight)
- Website: cn.ca
History of the Canadian National Logo
CN was incorporated on 6 June 1919 from a collection of bankrupt railways taken into public ownership. In 1960 the company commissioned designer Allan Fleming to create a modern identity, and his continuous-line ‘noodle’ CN, introduced in 1961, replaced the old maple-leaf heraldry. The flowing red noodle is still CN’s logo more than sixty years later and is a celebrated classic of corporate design. The current Canadian National logo presented on this page is the official mark in use today, kept in its original colors and proportions.
Meaning of the Canadian National Logo
- Allan Fleming’s single continuous line spells CN without lifting the pen — a ‘noodle’ that suggests one unbroken rail network coast to coast.
- The flowing curves evoke railway tracks, sidings and the movement of trains across the continent.
- The confident red is unmistakably Canadian and was chosen to stand out on locomotives, freight cars and containers in all weather.
