Transport for London Overview

Transport for London (TfL) is the local government body responsible for most of London’s transport network, including the London Underground, buses, the Elizabeth line, London Overground, trams, river services and major roads. Its red roundel is one of the most recognised transport symbols in the world.

  • Introduced: 2000
  • Founder / Formed by: The Greater London Authority Act 1999, as part of the restored Greater London Authority
  • Headquarters: London, United Kingdom
  • Industry: Public transport
  • Website: tfl.gov.uk

History of the Transport for London Logo

TfL took control of London’s transport in 2000 and inherited the famous bar-and-circle roundel, first used by the Underground in 1908 and standardised with the station name across the bar in the years that followed. Set in the Johnston typeface created for the network in 1916, the roundel was extended by TfL to every mode it runs, each with its own colour, while the red circle and blue bar remain the master TfL device. The current Transport for London logo presented on this page is the official mark in use today, kept in its original colors and proportions.

Meaning of the Transport for London Logo

  • The red circle is the original Underground ‘bullseye’, a symbol of London transport for more than a century.
  • The horizontal blue bar carries the name of the station or service, making the device a wayfinding tool as well as a logo.
  • Red and blue together give London’s network a single, unmistakable identity recognised by millions of passengers every day.
