History of the BNSF Railway Logo
BNSF was created by the merger of Burlington Northern and the Santa Fe, completed on 31 December 1996, and renamed BNSF Railway in 2005. That year it also replaced its earlier heritage cross emblem with the current orange and black ‘swoosh’ wedge logo, a modern mark designed to suggest speed and forward motion across its locomotives and intermodal fleet. The current BNSF Railway logo presented on this page is the official mark in use today, kept in its original colors and proportions.
Meaning of the BNSF Railway Logo
- The long black wedge sweeping under the letters is a stylised rail and motion line, suggesting speed and unstoppable forward movement.
- The italic orange BNSF lettering carries the heritage orange associated with the old Santa Fe and Great Northern railroads.
- The black and orange pairing gives the mark maximum visibility on locomotives, containers and signage across the network.
