About the RH Logo
Introduction
Two letters in an elegant, high-contrast serif — RH. The RH logo (Restoration Hardware) reduced a whole company’s name to a monogram, and made it one of the most recognizable marks in luxury home furnishings.
Brand Overview
RH, formerly Restoration Hardware, is an American luxury home-furnishings company founded in 1979 in Eureka, California, by Stephen Gordon. Headquartered in Corte Madera, California, RH sells furniture, lighting, textiles, and décor through its monumental gallery stores, catalogues, and online. Its official website is rh.com.
History of the RH Logo
Stephen Gordon founded Restoration Hardware after struggling to find fittings for his Victorian home restoration — the original stores mixed hardware with curiosities and nostalgia. As the company reinvented itself as a luxury design house, the name followed: in 2012 Restoration Hardware officially became RH, and the identity distilled to the two-letter serif monogram used today — the same classical letterforms, with everything else stripped away.
Meaning of the Logo
- The monogram: Two initials, like those engraved on silver or linen — a heritage mark for a brand that sells heirloom weight.
- The high-contrast serif: Fine hairlines against bold stems borrow from fashion’s luxury typography, not furniture retail.
- Black only: The refusal of color is the message — gallery restraint, museum confidence.
RH Logo Colors
| Color | Hex Code | Usage |
|---|---|---|
| Black | #000000 | The RH monogram — primary brand color |
| White | #FFFFFF | Backgrounds and reversed applications |
RH’s world is famously tonal — fog, stone, and linen — and the black monogram is designed to sit above all of it without competing.
Conclusion
Restoration Hardware spent thirty years building a name, then had the confidence to shorten it to two letters. The RH monogram is luxury branding at its most economical.
