Brand Overview
Melissa & Doug was founded in 1988 by Melissa and Doug Bernstein, who started the company in a Connecticut garage with a children’s video before pivoting to toys. Its wooden puzzles, play food, blocks and role-play sets became the standard-bearers for screen-free, open-ended play, and the company grew into one of America’s best-known independent toy brands.

History of the Melissa & Doug Logo
The red oval with the founders’ names in white script has been the company’s signature since its early years, styled like a hand-signed maker’s label. While the brand’s packaging has modernised around it, the oval itself — part nameplate, part autograph — has remained the constant parents look for on wooden toy shelves.
Meaning of the Melissa & Doug Logo
- The signature: the names are written, not typeset — a promise that two real founders stand behind every toy.
- The red oval: the label shape recalls a craftsman’s stamp burned into wood, matching the brand’s material of choice.
- Warm red: the homey red suits kitchens, classrooms and playrooms rather than electronics aisles.
