Brand Overview
Pelikan is a German manufacturer of writing instruments, inks and school supplies founded in Hanover in 1838 by chemist Carl Hornemann, who began by making paints and inks. Its striped Souverän fountain pens are icons, and the brand is now part of the international Pelikan Group.

History of the Pelikan Logo
The pelican feeding her chicks in the nest comes from Günther Wagner’s family coat of arms — he bought the company in 1871 and registered the bird as one of Germany’s earliest trademarks. The chicks in the nest were reduced over the years from four to one, while the flowing blue script stayed.
Meaning of the Pelikan Logo
- The mother pelican: in heraldry the pelican wounds her own breast to feed her young — devotion and care as a brand promise.
- The script: the hand-drawn cursive is the stroke of the nib itself, frozen mid-signature.
- The deep blue: ink blue, darker than most — the colour of the iron-gall inks Pelikan began with.
