Vespa Overview
Vespa is Piaggio’s iconic scooter brand — the original Italian scooter, designed in 1946 and now sold worldwide in models from the Primavera to the electric Elettrica.
- Founded: 1946
- Headquarters: Pontedera, Italy
- Industry: Motorcycles
- Website: vespa.com
History of the Vespa Logo
Vespa was created in 1946 by Piaggio, with aeronautical engineer Corradino D’Ascanio designing a scooter for postwar Italy; Enrico Piaggio named it ‘Vespa’ — wasp — for its narrow waist and buzzing two-stroke sound. The handwritten-style script logo, drawn for the first advertisements, has remained the brand’s signature ever since, essentially unchanged. The current Vespa logo presented on this page is the official mark in use today, kept in its original colors and proportions.
Meaning of the Vespa Logo
- The script rises like the scooter accelerating away — the extended V is drawn as a flourish, not a letter.
- Vespa blue is the calm Mediterranean counterpart to racing red: the scooter as lifestyle, not sport.
- Keeping a 1946 signature into the electric era is the brand’s promise: the silhouette and the script never change.
