About the edX Logo Logo
Introduction
Three lowercase letters in near-black green — edX is the mark of the nonprofit that brought Harvard and MIT courses to the entire internet, free.
Brand Overview
edX was founded in 2012 by Harvard University and MIT, each contributing $30 million to build a nonprofit MOOC platform — a direct answer to for-profit rivals. Its first course, MIT’s Circuits and Electronics, drew 155,000 learners from 162 countries. edX grew to host courses from 160+ institutions for over 80 million learners, pioneering verified certificates and MicroMasters programs. In 2021, edX was acquired by education company 2U for $800 million, with proceeds funding a new nonprofit (now Axim Collaborative) to carry on the open-education mission.
History of the edX Logo
The original edX logo used a red lowercase wordmark. As the platform matured, the identity was refreshed into the current mark: “ed” in lowercase followed by a capital “X”, set in a friendly rounded sans and colored a very dark green (#02262B) in the single-color version. The X — long the symbol of the unknown variable, and of “extension” in Harvard Extension School tradition — became the memorable hook of the name, visually emphasized by its capital form while “ed” stays soft and approachable.
Meaning of the Logo
- The capital X: The standout letter — X for the unknown you’re here to learn, and for expanding access to education.
- Lowercase “ed”: Education without intimidation; the friendly half of a serious institution.
- Dark green: A scholarly, chalkboard-deep tone that separates edX from bright-blue commercial rivals.

Conclusion
The edX logo is a study in balance: two soft letters for openness, one hard X for academic ambition — nonprofit idealism wearing an Ivy League name.
