About the UPS Logo
Introduction
A brown shield banded in gold, three lowercase letters standing inside it — the UPS logo is one of the oldest continuously used marks in American business. The shield in this download is the current version, flattened for the digital age in 2014.
Brand Overview
UPS (United Parcel Service) is an American package delivery and supply chain company founded in Seattle in 1907 by James E. Casey, who started the American Messenger Company with a $100 loan. Headquartered in Atlanta, it is one of the world’s largest delivery companies. Its official website is ups.com.
History of the UPS Logo
The shield shape dates to 1937; Paul Rand redrew it in 1961, adding a bow-tied parcel on top. The current version — the artwork in this download — arrived in 2014: the bow was removed and the shield flattened into the clean two-colour form UPS uses today, keeping Rand’s geometry of a gold band across the top of a brown field.
Meaning of the Logo
- The shield: A heraldic shape kept since 1937 — protection for whatever is entrusted to the company, drawn as armour.
- UPS Brown: The deep brown (#301506) is the company’s century-old livery colour, trademarked and recognised worldwide — “What can Brown do for you?”
- The gold band: A ribbon of gold (#FAB80A) across the shield’s crown — the premium band of the 2014 redraw.
UPS Logo Colors
| Color | Hex Code | Usage |
|---|---|---|
| UPS Brown | #301506 | The shield field and its border (the logo file’s own fill value) |
| UPS Gold | #FAB80A | The top band and the UPS letters (the logo file’s own fill value) |
Both colours are the artwork’s own fill values, sampled from the logo file.
Conclusion
UPS’s logo is a shield that has outlived every redesign around it: brown, gold, and three letters that mean the package is protected.
