About Tommy Hilfiger
Tommy Hilfiger is an American fashion brand founded in New York City in 1985 by designer Tommy Hilfiger, with backing from businessman Mohan Murjani. It quickly became known for classic, preppy American style aimed at a younger audience. Today it is a Dutch-based subsidiary of PVH Corp. (since 2010), selling apparel, footwear, accessories, and fragrances in around 100 countries, with founder Tommy Hilfiger still leading its creative direction.
Tommy Hilfiger Logo Meaning and History
The brand’s emblem is a rectangular flag split into navy, white, and red panels — borrowed from the International Code of Signals, where that exact flag pattern stands for the letter “H” (Hotel). Here the “H” simply stands for Hilfiger, and the nautical color scheme doubles as an expression of the brand’s preppy, all-American heritage. The flag sits between the words of an uppercase serif wordmark, creating one of the most recognizable marks in fashion. The brand famously considered replacing the flag in the early 1990s when logo-heavy streetwear fell out of favor, but wisely reconsidered — the emblem survived unchanged in spirit ever since.
Evolution of the Tommy Hilfiger Logo
- 1985: Launch — the uppercase serif wordmark split by the red, white, and navy signal-flag emblem.
- Early 1990s: Minor refinements; a proposed redesign is abandoned and the flag stays.
- 2006–2010: The logo carries unchanged through the Apax Partners buyout and the 2010 acquisition by PVH Corp.
- Today: A streamlined version with navy-blue serif lettering and the classic flag, instantly recognizable worldwide.
Tommy Hilfiger Logo Colors and Font
The palette is the American tricolor of the flag: navy blue, red, and white — the text rendered in deep navy on a white background. The wordmark uses an elegant uppercase serif typeface that conveys timeless, classic American luxury.
