About SpaceX
SpaceX (Space Exploration Technologies Corp.) is an American aerospace company founded in 2002 by Elon Musk and headquartered in Hawthorne, California. It was created to cut the cost of spaceflight through reusable rockets, with the goal of a human colony on Mars. SpaceX builds Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy launch vehicles, Dragon spacecraft, and the Starship system, while its Starlink constellation delivers satellite internet worldwide.
The company has repeatedly made history: the first privately developed rocket to reach orbit (2008), the first commercial spacecraft to visit the International Space Station (2012), and the first successful landing and reuse of an orbital booster (2015).
Logo Meaning and History
The SpaceX wordmark is a custom-drawn, futuristic uppercase sans-serif whose defining feature is the letter X: a dark blue diagonal bar paired with a light gray sweeping curve. According to the company, that gray stroke is a stylized rocket launch trajectory, curving upward from liftoff through orbit, so the final letter of the name doubles as a diagram of the company’s mission. Designed from scratch by RO-Studio, the X also works as a standalone icon.
Evolution
- 2002: The original logo was a two-tier design with “SPACE” above a stylized X of three blue stripes, and “SPACE EXPLORATION TECHNOLOGIES” in red beneath a rule.
- 2004: The name became a single-line uppercase wordmark, dropping the red tagline for a cleaner, technical look.
- 2006: The current form was introduced: custom extended letterforms with the blue-and-gray trajectory X, drawn from scratch by RO-Studio.
- 2015: The gray trajectory stroke became the brand’s signature motif, echoing the visual arc of a returning Falcon 9 booster.
- 2020: The standalone X became a fixture of the Crew Dragon era, appearing on flight suits and spacecraft hardware.
Colors and Font
The SpaceX identity pairs a deep cosmic blue (commonly matched to around #0A2342) with a light gray trajectory swoosh (near #9E9E9E), colors that read as professional, confident, and forward-looking. The lettering is a fully custom sans-serif by RO-Studio; the closest off-the-shelf matches are Bank Gothic Std Medium and Morris Sans Std Medium.
