NBA Overview
The NBA (National Basketball Association) is North America’s premier professional basketball league, with 30 teams in the United States and Canada.
- Founded: 1946
- Headquarters: New York City, United States
- Sport: Basketball league
- Website: nba.com
History of the NBA Logo
The league was founded in 1946 as the Basketball Association of America and became the NBA in 1949. Its logo — the ‘Logoman’, a dribbling player in silhouette between panels of blue and red — was designed by Alan Siegel in 1969, modelled on the great Jerry West, and became one of the most recognised marks in world sport. A 2017 refresh sharpened the silhouette’s lines and deepened the colours without changing the design. The current NBA logo presented on this page is the official mark in use today, kept in its original colors and proportions.
Meaning of the NBA Logo
- The silhouette puts the player at the very centre of the league’s identity.
- The red and blue panels are the colours of the United States, split either side of the player.
- The timeless figure has fronted the league for over fifty years without needing words.
