About the National Geographic American TV channel Logo

About National Geographic

National Geographic is one of the world’s most respected media and educational organizations. It began with the National Geographic Society, founded on January 27, 1888, in Washington, D.C., by a group of 33 scientists, explorers and scholars with the goal of increasing and spreading geographic knowledge. Its flagship magazine, first published that year, became famous for groundbreaking photography of nature, science and world cultures. Today the brand spans television channels, digital media and grant-funded exploration.

Logo Meaning and History

The National Geographic logo is a single, bold yellow rectangle, usually shown upright beside a black uppercase wordmark. The rectangle began life as the magazine’s cover border and was developed into a standalone symbol by the design firm Chermayeff & Geismar. Deliberately empty, the frame acts as a window through which the brand’s subject matter can take center stage.

Evolution

  • 1888 – The National Geographic Society is founded and the first magazine issue is published with a plain typographic cover, no border.
  • 1910 – A yellow cover border, originally decorated with an oak-leaf pattern, is introduced on the magazine, establishing the yellow frame as a brand marker.
  • 1970s – Chermayeff & Geismar formalize the yellow rectangle as the standalone National Geographic symbol, which becomes the official brand logo.
  • 1997 – The National Geographic Channel launches internationally, extending the yellow rectangle lockup to television.
  • 2019 – The Walt Disney Company acquires majority control of National Geographic Partners through its Fox deal, expanding the brand into streaming and global channels.

Colors and Font

The logo is dominated by National Geographic yellow, a warm golden shade (#FFCC00), paired with black uppercase wordmark lettering and a clean white background. Yellow was chosen for its visibility on newsstands and its associations with optimism and brightness. The wordmark is set in a bold, evenly spaced sans-serif, keeping the full lockup simple, geometric and instantly reproducible at any size.
