History of the Liverpool Logo
Liverpool were founded in 1892 after Everton’s departure from Anfield left John Houlding to form a new club. The crest is built around the Liver bird, the symbol of the city of Liverpool; above the shield sits the decoration of the Shankly Gates with the anthem ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’, and eternal flames flank the badge in memory of the victims of the Hillsborough disaster, with ‘EST 1892’ on the ribbon below. The current Liverpool logo presented on this page is the official mark in use today, kept in its original colors and proportions.
Meaning of the Liverpool Logo
- The Liver bird is the emblem of the city of Liverpool itself.
- The eternal flames are a permanent memorial to the 97 supporters lost at Hillsborough.
- The Shankly Gates flourish honours Bill Shankly, the manager who built the modern club.
