IBM, the International Business Machines Corporation, is an American multinational technology company founded in 1911 as the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company and renamed IBM in 1924. Headquartered in Armonk, New York, it pioneered enterprise computing, invented the floppy disk and an early ATM, and holds tens of thousands of patents. Its century-plus heritage and blue branding earned it the enduring nickname “Big Blue.”
Logo Meaning and History
The famous striped IBM logo was created in 1972 by legendary graphic designer Paul Rand. Rand replaced a 13-stripe version with the current 8-bar design, using the horizontal lines to imply speed and dynamism — a break from the heavy, solid blocks of earlier corporate marks. The rich blue color became so closely associated with the company that it helped inspire the “Big Blue” nickname, conveying trust, professionalism, and stability. Rand’s rebus variation of 1981 — an eye, a bee, and the letter M — remains one of design history’s most celebrated posters.
Evolution
- 1947: An acronym-based IBM logo in Beton Bold replaces the earlier globe logo, establishing the three-letter mark.
- 1956: Paul Rand redesigns the logo, swapping Beton Bold for a modified City Medium typeface and modernizing the letterforms.
- 1962–1972: A 13-bar striped version appears, first public with the TSS/360 release in 1966.
- 1972: Rand introduces the iconic 8-bar logo, with fewer, bolder stripes that photocopied more cleanly — a real concern then.
- 2018: The logo is subtly refined with bolder letters and adjusted stripes.
Colors and Font
The IBM logo uses IBM Blue, specified as Pantone 2718C, commonly rendered online as approximately #054ADA. The blue signifies reliability and trust, anchors of the Big Blue identity. The wordmark letterforms derive from a modified City Bold typeface designed by Paul Rand. IBM used Helvetica as its corporate typeface for 50 years until it was replaced in 2017 by the custom-designed IBM Plex family.
