About Dell
Dell is an American technology company founded in 1984 by Michael Dell as PC’s Limited, renamed Dell in 1987, and headquartered in Round Rock, Texas. It grew from a dorm-room PC venture into one of the world’s largest makers of computers, servers, and storage systems. The 2016 acquisition of EMC created Dell Technologies, making the company a major force in enterprise infrastructure and cloud services.
Logo Meaning and History
Dell’s most recognizable feature is its tilted letter “E,” which was designed to symbolize the world turning to its ear — a visual promise that the company listens to its customers. The signature blue color stands for loyalty, trustworthiness, and intelligence. When the wordmark was later enclosed in a circle, the ring came to represent the company’s global presence and continuous evolution.
Evolution
- 1984: The first logo appears under PC’s Limited: black serif capitals with parallel horizontal rules above and below the name.
- 1987: With the rename to Dell, a blue wordmark in Friz Quadrata with enclosing horizontal lines introduces the brand’s blue identity.
- 1992: Siegel+Gale redesigns the logo with a modified Futura Extra Bold wordmark and the now-famous tilted “E,” referring to “the world turning to its ear.”
- 2010: The wordmark is enclosed in a blue circle alongside the slogan “The power to do more,” emphasizing global reach.
- 2016: The circle is refined with thinner lines and a cleaner, lighter design for the digital era.
Colors and Font
The Dell logo centers on Dell Blue, a custom corporate shade commonly rendered in web databases as approximately #007DB8, paired with white. The wordmark is set in a modified version of Futura Extra Bold, with the tilted “E” as its signature customization. For marketing and corporate communications, Dell adopted a custom version of the Museo typeface after 2010, while the logo lettering itself retains its Futura-based form.
