Logo Meaning and History
ChatGPT’s logo is OpenAI’s “blossom” mark – a hexagonal, flower-like emblem formed from three interlocking triangles. It was introduced in 2017 as the company’s research icon, designed by a team including Greg Brockman, Ilya Sutskever, Ludwig Pettersson and Ben Barry. The geometric pattern recalls a camera aperture, a blooming flower, or the “seed of life” motif in sacred geometry, and it has been likened to a sailor’s monkey-fist knot. After ChatGPT’s explosive launch in late 2022, the blossom became one of the defining symbols of the AI era, standing for precision, potential and optimism.

- 2017 – The blossom is introduced as OpenAI’s research icon during the shift from research lab to product company.

- 2025 – OpenAI’s first full rebrand refines the blossom with thicker, uniform lines and a wider center, introduces the OpenAI Sans typeface, and adds a pulsing blue “emotive point” for ChatGPT’s voice interface.
Colors and Font
The ChatGPT logo is most often seen in black (#000000) on white (#FFFFFF), with dark-mode variants reversing the two. In 2025 OpenAI introduced OpenAI Sans, a custom geometric typeface with rounded, friendly letterforms inspired by ChatGPT’s circular typing cursor. The refreshed brand palette leans on greys and blues, with the blue “emotive point” representing voice interaction.
