The BBC, the British Broadcasting Corporation, is the world’s oldest national broadcaster and a public-service institution founded in October 1922, funded principally by the British television licence fee. From radio to today’s BBC News and BBC iPlayer, the corporation has defined standards for public broadcasting worldwide. The block logo is among the most recognized media identities on earth.
The BBC logo places the letters B, B and C in three separate square blocks, a format that has anchored the corporation’s identity for generations. The blocks convey authority and trust, while letting every BBC channel and service – from BBC One to BBC Sport – pair its name with the same parent brand. It reproduces clearly at any size, a model of functional British design.
The classic BBC blocks logo is black and white: white letters inside solid black squares, or reversed in white on black. The 1997 version uses Gill Sans (Eric Gill, 1926); the 2021 version uses the BBC’s own BBC Reith typeface, named after founder Lord Reith. The core corporate blocks remain monochrome, though red appears in some channel identities.
