AXA is a French multinational insurance and investment group headquartered in Paris, and one of the world’s largest insurers and asset managers, operating in more than 50 countries across Europe, North America, the Middle East, Africa and Asia-Pacific. Its roots stretch back to 1816, but it took its current name in 1985 after Mutuelles Unies rebranded. The name ‘AXA’ was deliberately chosen: short, symmetrical, easy to pronounce in any language and free for worldwide trademark registration. Under longtime leader Claude Bébéar, AXA grew through acquisitions, including XL Group in 2018.
The AXA logo is built around three intertwined letters: a custom italic wordmark leaning right, with the legs of the two A’s joining beneath the X — symbolizing unity and partnership. Before 1985 the company traded as Mutuelles Unies, with a dark green rectangular logo bearing white lowercase lettering and a wing-like emblem. The 1985 rebrand introduced the AXA monogram in black on light; in 1994 the letters turned white on a blue square, joined by a red diagonal stroke rising from the X — a symbol of growth.
The brand’s palette is a deep corporate blue, a vivid red accent and white — blue for trust and stability, red for energy and ambition. The custom italic typeface has slightly flared letter edges reminiscent of serifs, giving the three letters a timeless, monumental quality.
