About Aviva

Aviva plc is a British multinational insurance company headquartered in London. It has about 25.2 million customers in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Canada, and is the largest general insurer in the UK and a leading life and pensions provider. Listed on the London Stock Exchange as a FTSE 100 constituent, Aviva’s heritage traces back to the establishment of the Hand in Hand Fire & Life Insurance Society in London in 1696. Amanda Blanc is the company’s CEO.

Aviva Logo Meaning and History

“Aviva” is an invented palindrome derived from “viva,” the Latin word for ‘alive’ — chosen to be short, memorable, and to work in every language. The logo’s triangle is based on the spire of Norwich Cathedral, honoring the Norwich Union heritage at the heart of the group. The name replaced CGNU plc in 2002, following the 2000 merger of Norwich Union and CGU plc, and became the worldwide consumer brand in 2008.

Aviva Logo Evolution

• 2000: Norwich Union merges with CGU plc to form CGNU plc.
• 2002: Shareholders vote to rename the company Aviva plc; the launch is backed by a £9 million rebranding campaign featuring Bruce Willis and Alice Cooper.
• 2008: Aviva is adopted as the worldwide consumer-facing brand and the Norwich Union name is phased out.
• 2015: Aviva completes the £5.6 billion takeover of Friends Life Group.
• 2024–2025: Aviva agrees to acquire Direct Line Group for £3.7 billion, completing the deal on July 1, 2025.
