About Audi

Audi AG is a German luxury automobile manufacturer headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, and a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group. Its roots trace to 1909, when engineer August Horch founded the company, choosing “Audi” — the Latin word for “listen,” a translation of his German surname, Horch. Audi is known worldwide for premium cars, its quattro all-wheel-drive technology, and the slogan “Vorsprung durch Technik” (“Progress through Technology”).

Audi Logo Meaning and History

Audi’s logo is four interlocking silver rings, among the most famous automotive emblems in the world. Each ring represents one of four independent German carmakers — Audi, DKW, Horch, and Wanderer — that merged in 1932 to form Auto Union. Linked together, the rings symbolize the inseparable unity of the four founding companies, a heritage Audi has proudly carried for nearly a century. The first ring from the left stands for Audi, followed by DKW, Horch, and Wanderer.

Evolution of the Audi Logo

• 1910: Audi’s first emblem featured the number “1” beneath an inverted triangle, signaling the young company’s ambition.
• 1920: A distinctive “Audi” script with slanted letterforms was created by graphic designer Lucian Bernhard for the historic company.
• 1932: The four-ring Auto Union emblem debuted, each ring representing one of the four merged companies.
• 1949: Auto Union was re-established in Ingolstadt, keeping the four rings as its emblem.
• 1965: Volkswagen relaunched the Audi brand, and the rings gradually returned to prominence; the wordmark-in-oval was phased out after 1994.
• 1995: The rings were refined with a three-dimensional chrome finish.
• 2009: For the brand’s centenary, the logo was updated with the custom Audi Type font.
• 2016: The rings went flat and two-dimensional with the wordmark removed — the clean, digital-first emblem used today.
