About Armstrong

Armstrong World Industries is an American manufacturer of floors and ceilings, based in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. In 1860, Thomas M. Armstrong, the son of Scottish-Irish immigrants, joined John D. Glass to open a one-room shop in Pittsburgh hand-carving cork bottle stoppers — their first deliveries went out in a wheelbarrow. Armstrong was branding each cork he shipped as early as 1864 and placing a written guarantee in every bag. The company incorporated in 1891, grew into the world’s largest cork supplier by the 1890s, introduced Armstrong linoleum in 1909, and expanded into ceilings, vinyl, hardwood, and laminate flooring. The founder’s motto of letting the buyer have faith still defines the company.
