Argos is a British catalogue and online retailer founded by entrepreneur Richard Tompkins. Tompkins, who had built the Green Shield Stamps business, registered Argos Distributors in November 1972 and opened the first catalogue stores in 1973, naming the chain after the Greek city of Argos. Shoppers browsed the famous printed catalogue — the laminated book of dreams — then ordered at the counter for quick collection. Argos was bought by BAT in 1979, demerged and listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1990, acquired by GUS for £1.9 billion in 1998, and bought by Sainsbury’s for £1.4 billion in 2016. In 2020 it retired the printed catalogue to become digital-only.
The Argos name means swift in Greek, reflecting the chain’s promise of quick, convenient shopping. The logo has always been a bold, confident wordmark — for most of its modern history rendered as white lettering on a red background — making it one of the most recognized retail marks in Britain.
Argos red is the brand’s signature — a strong, warm red paired with white lettering in a rounded, friendly sans-serif. The high-contrast red-and-white combination is designed for instant recognition on high streets and screens alike. Whether you need an argos logo png with a transparent background or an argos logo svg vector for crisp scaling, the bold wordmark stays sharp at any size.
