Argonaut Games (initially Argonaut Software) is a British video game developer founded on February 23, 1982, in London by Jeremy “Jez” San. The studio became famous for its early 3D work: it developed Star Fox (1993) for the Super Nintendo in partnership with Nintendo and co-designed the Super FX chip that made the console’s 3D graphics possible. Argonaut also created the Starglider series and the beloved platformer Croc: Legend of the Gobbos (1997). After layoffs and administration, the original company was liquidated in October 2004. Argonaut Games was relaunched on August 28, 2024, as a boutique publisher, returning with a remaster of Croc: Legend of the Gobbos for modern consoles and PC.
Named after the Argonauts of Greek mythology — the heroes who sailed with Jason in search of the Golden Fleece — the Argonaut name evokes adventure and questing, themes that ran through the studio’s games from Starglider to Croc.
