About Android
Android is Google’s mobile operating system and the most widely used operating system in the world. It began as Android Inc., a startup founded in 2003 by Andy Rubin and his colleagues; Google acquired the company in 2005 and launched the first commercial Android phone — the HTC Dream — in 2008. Today Android powers billions of smartphones, tablets, watches, TVs and cars.
Android Logo Meaning and History
The Android logo meaning is pure openness. The friendly green robot — nicknamed ‘Bugdroid’ by the Android team, and later given the official name ‘The Bot’ — was designed in 2007 by Google graphic designer Irina Blok. Inspired by the simple human figures on restroom signs, the robot was deliberately released under a Creative Commons license so anyone could remix it, mirroring Android’s open-source philosophy. Few people realize that this playful robot has been the heart of the Android logo meaning since day one: technology that belongs to everyone.
Evolution of the Android Logo

- 2023: The 3D robot replaces the flat 2D version, paired with a new ‘Android’ wordmark starting with a capital A and a fresher brand green.
Android Logo Colors and Font
The classic Android green is #A4C639, the bright shade used on the original Bugdroid. The 2023 rebrand introduced a fresher brand green, #3DDC84, alongside the new 3D robot. The wordmark uses a custom rounded typeface, with a capital ‘A’ since the 2023 refresh.
