About Amstel
Amstel is a Dutch beer brand founded in 1870 in Amsterdam by Charles Antoine de Pesters, Johannes Hendrikus van Marwijk Kooy, and Willem Eduard Uhlenbroek, and named after the Amstel river. The symbolic first stone was laid on June 11, 1870, the first brew was completed on October 25, 1871, and the brewery officially opened on January 15, 1872. Amstel grew into a major Dutch exporter before being taken over by Heineken N.V. in 1968; the Amsterdam brewing plant closed in 1982 and production moved to Heineken’s main plant at Zoeterwoude. Today Amstel Lager is sold in 75 countries, alongside Amstel Light, Amstel 1870, Amstel Zero, and Amstel Radler.
Amstel Logo Meaning and History
The Amstel logo centers on a proud red crest bearing the AMSTEL wordmark and the founding year “1870,” honoring the brewery’s Amsterdam heritage. The shield-like emblem echoes traditional European brewing heraldry and has carried the brand through more than 150 years of ownership changes, from an independent Amsterdam brewery to a global Heineken brand.

- 1968: Heineken N.V. acquires Amstel, and the crest is carried forward as the brand’s heritage mark.
