Amnesty International is a global non-governmental organization focused on human rights, headquartered in London, United Kingdom. It was founded in July 1961 by English barrister Peter Benenson, whose article “The Forgotten Prisoners” appeared on the front page of The Observer that May, launching an appeal on behalf of prisoners of conscience. The organization campaigns for a world in which every person enjoys the human rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Amnesty says it has more than ten million members and supporters worldwide, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1977 for its defense of human dignity against torture, and works through research, direct-appeal campaigns, media attention, and lobbying.
The Amnesty emblem — a candle wrapped in barbed wire — is one of the most recognized symbols of the human rights movement. The candle represents hope and the light of truth, while the barbed wire recalls the prisoners of conscience the organization was founded to defend. Set in the organization’s signature blue, the mark signals a global, non-partisan identity that has carried Amnesty’s campaigns for more than six decades.
The Amnesty identity is anchored in its signature blue, paired with white, and set in a strong modern sans-serif wordmark. The blue conveys trust and calm authority, while the candle emblem adds an instantly human element.
