About AMF

AMF — the American Machine and Foundry Company — helped turn bowling into America’s most popular participatory sport. It began on March 16, 1900, when Moorehead Patterson formed the American Machine Foundry Co. in New Jersey to make equipment for the tobacco industry. After World War II, AMF moved into bowling: the first fully automated Pinspotter was unveiled at the American Bowling Congress tournament in Buffalo in 1946 and entered full production in 1952. AMF founded the Bowling World Cup in 1965, became AMF, Inc. in 1971, and was bought by Irwin Jacobs’s Minstar in 1985; the bowling divisions were sold to Commonwealth Venture Partners in 1986. Goldman Sachs bought it for $1.4 billion in 1996, took it public in 1997, but losses led to delisting in 2000. Today the AMF name lives on with Lucky Strike Entertainment, Hollywood Bowl Group and QubicaAMF.

AMF Logo Meaning and History

The three-letter AMF mark is pure mid-century American industry — short for American Machine and Foundry, a name that once spanned bowling pinsetters, nuclear reactors and, for a time, Harley-Davidson. In bowling, those three letters still signal the automatic era: pinspotters, automatic scoring and the modern bowling center.
