About the American Legion Logo

About American Legion

The American Legion is the largest war veterans’ service organization in the United States. Founded March 15–17, 1919, in Paris by about a thousand officers of the American Expeditionary Force, including Theodore Roosevelt Jr., for returning servicemembers and their communities. Congress chartered the Legion on September 16, 1919. It quickly grew past a million members and today counts over 2.4 million members in some 14,000 posts worldwide, headquartered in Indianapolis. Landmark achievements include crafting the first U.S. Flag Code in 1923–24, helping create the U.S. Veterans Bureau in 1921, and drafting the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944 — the G.I. Bill.

American Legion Logo Meaning and History

The American Legion emblem — the “Legion button” — is one of the most symbolically rich marks in American civic life. Its center is the World War I Victory Button on a circular band of blue enamel bearing “American Legion” in gold, within a radiating star-burst. The star’s rays symbolize the far-reaching impact of veterans’ service, while the laurel wreath represents honor, achievement, and victory.

American Legion Logo Evolution

  • 1919 — The National Executive Committee officially adopts the Legion emblem, built around the WWI Victory Button.
  • 1920s — The emblem appears on members’ caps, post signage, and publications as membership passes one million.
  • 1944 — The Legion drafts the G.I. Bill; the button becomes a national symbol worn by a generation of veterans.
  • 1960s–1990s — The emblem stays unchanged through decades of service.
