Alliant Foodservice was one of the largest broadline food distributors in the United States. It was formed in 1976 as a division of Kraft Foods and separately incorporated in 1990. In 1996 the company was sold to an affiliate of the New York investment firm Clayton, Dubilier & Rice and to Alliant’s management. Headquartered in Deerfield, Illinois, Alliant operated 48 distribution centers serving roughly 125,000 healthcare, restaurant, lodging and institutional accounts, distributing over 135,000 items — produce, refrigerated and frozen foods, meat, seafood, poultry, grocery products and foodservice equipment — with about 12,000 employees and fiscal 2000 net sales of approximately $6.6 billion. In November 2001 the company was acquired by Ahold’s U.S. Foodservice, combining into America’s second-largest foodservice distributor with about $19 billion in sales.
As a “broadline” distributor — carrying a full line of food and supplies rather than a single category — Alliant’s brand stood for one-stop reliability for kitchens across America. The company also ran a private-label program of more than 6,000 products that accounted for nearly a third of its sales, serving healthcare, restaurants, lodging providers and contract feeders.
