Air One was an Italian low-cost airline that began operations as Aliadriatica in 1983 before being renamed Air One on 23 November 1995. The name “airone” is Italian for “heron,” the elegant bird that featured in the airline’s branding. Based in Italy, the carrier grew into the country’s second-largest airline, operating domestic and European routes with a modern fleet. In 2009, Air One merged with Alitalia, and the brand was gradually phased out, with operations ceasing on 30 October 2014. The airline remains a fondly remembered chapter in Italian commercial aviation history.
The Air One logo centered on the heron — the “airone” — a graceful bird symbolizing flight, elegance, and Italian natural beauty. Airline logos of the era typically paired a distinctive bird or abstract flight motif with clean, modern typography in sky blue, white, or silver tones evoking the openness of air travel. The heron device gave Air One a uniquely Italian identity among Europe’s low-cost carriers, appearing on aircraft tails, boarding passes, and airport signage across the country. After the Alitalia merger, the heron livery disappeared from Italian skies, making the Air One logo a nostalgic emblem of 1990s and 2000s European aviation.
