The Ackerley Group was an American media company founded in 1975 in Seattle, Washington, by businessman Barry Ackerley. It owned and operated radio and television stations across the United States, and — famously — the NBA’s Seattle SuperSonics from 1983 to 2001 and the WNBA’s Seattle Storm. Its outdoor advertising division operated more than 6,000 billboards in the Boston, Seattle and Portland, Oregon metropolitan markets, giving it dominant out-of-home positions where competitors had no inventory. In October 2001, Ackerley announced its sale to Clear Channel Communications; the merger was completed on June 14, 2002, at a record-setting valuation of about $1.1 billion.
The Ackerley brand carried the founder’s name across broadcasting and billboards alike. The outdoor advertising division’s identity was built for the roadside: bold, high-contrast lettering designed to be read at highway speed. The Ackerley name became synonymous with Seattle media — from the SuperSonics’ championship era to the billboards lining Interstate 5 — representing a family-owned media empire that the Ackerley family controlled with about 82% of the stock at the time of the sale.
The Ackerley outdoor branding used bold, roadside-ready lettering in high-contrast colors built for maximum visibility. Whether you need an ackerley logo png with a transparent background or an ackerley logo svg vector for crisp scaling, the strong wordmark stays readable at any size.
