About American Airlines

American Airlines of Fort Worth, Texas, is one of the world’s largest airlines, with ~900 aircraft serving 300+ destinations. Its origins trace to 1926, when Robertson Aircraft — chief pilot Charles Lindbergh — flew mail between Chicago and St. Louis; it became American Airways in 1930 and American Airlines in 1934.

American Airlines Logo Meaning and History

The AA logo began in 1931, when employee Goodrich Murphy won a logo contest with a white eagle (copied from a Scottish hotel brochure) inside a blue circle, flanked by bold red ‘A’s. The patriotic red, white and blue palette honored the airline’s American identity. In 1968 Massimo Vignelli of Unimark created a landmark identity: a blue stylized eagle (drawn by Henry Dreyfuss) between two monumental ‘AA’ letterforms — a design that endured 45 years. In 2013 American unveiled its current identity with FutureBrand: a red, white and blue ‘flight symbol’ — an abstract eagle in motion — beside a lowercase italic wordmark.

American Airlines Logo Evolution

  • 1931–1945: Goodrich Murphy’s design — a white eagle on a globe in a blue circle, flanked by red ‘AA’ letters.
  • 1946: The circles are removed, the eagle grows more prominent, and the name is standardized in italic capitals.
  • 1962: The identity is refreshed with a lighter red accent and the eagle enclosed in a red circle.
  • 1968–2013: Massimo Vignelli’s Unimark redesign — the Dreyfuss blue eagle between two bold ‘AA’ symbols — becomes an icon of corporate identity.
  • 2013–present: The ‘A New American’ rebrand introduces the red-white-and-blue flight symbol and a lowercase italic wordmark.
