About Cisco
Cisco is an American multinational technology company founded in December 1984 by Stanford computer scientists Leonard Bosack and Sandy Lerner. Headquartered in San Jose, California, it grew from a maker of multiprotocol routers into one of the world’s largest networking companies, with products spanning routers, switches, cybersecurity, and collaboration tools such as Webex. The name “Cisco” is an abbreviation of San Francisco, the city that inspired both the company and its visual identity.
Logo Meaning and History
The Cisco logo is a stylized Golden Gate Bridge, the landmark spanning San Francisco Bay. The bridge is reduced to a series of vertical lines that double as an abstract image of network signal bars, neatly capturing the company’s mission of connecting the world through digital networks. This bridge motif has survived every redesign since the founding, making the mark one of the most recognizable in technology.
Evolution
- 1984: The original logo showed a simple drawing of the Golden Gate Bridge towers with no wordmark, symbolizing the company’s San Francisco roots.
- 1990: The emblem became abstract white stripes on a blue rectangle, with “ciscoSystems” in red beneath it.
- 1996: The blue was deepened, the bridge took on a digital-signal look, and the wordmark became “Cisco Systems”.
- 2006: The logo was flattened and rounded into bolder bars, the company dropped “Systems” from its branding, and the wordmark returned to lowercase.
- 2013: The palette was simplified to a single internet-friendly blue, giving the mark its current clean, modern form.
Colors and Font
Cisco’s brand colors are centered on Cisco Blue (#049FD9), a bright sky blue, often paired with Cisco Dark Blue (#00BCEB) and black. Earlier versions of the logo featured a red wordmark, but the modern identity stays all blue. The wordmark is set in a bold geometric sans-serif based on Futura Bold, whose smooth, rounded letterforms echo the rounded bars of the bridge emblem.
