About Akron Zips

The Akron Zips are the intercollegiate athletic teams representing the University of Akron in Akron, Ohio. Competing in NCAA Division I as members of the Mid-American Conference, the Zips sponsor 17 varsity teams across men’s, women’s, and coed sports, with the football team playing in the Football Bowl Subdivision. Their mascot is Zippy, a kangaroo — one of only eight female college mascots in the United States.

Akron Zips Logo Meaning and History

The Akron Zips logo centers on a bold, block-style “A” — often paired with a leaping kangaroo mark — set in the school’s blue and gold. The nickname itself dates to a 1925 campus contest: freshman Margaret Hamlin won a $10 prize for suggesting “Zippers,” a nod to the rubber overshoes made by Akron’s B.F. Goodrich Company that were popular in the 1920s and 1930s. Athletic director Kenneth Cochrane officially shortened the nickname to “Zips” in 1950.
