About Arsenal

Arsenal Football Club is an English professional football club based in Islington, London, competing in the Premier League. Founded in 1886 by workers from the Royal Arsenal munitions factory in Woolwich, south-east London — first named Dial Square, then Royal Arsenal, then Woolwich Arsenal in 1893. In 1913 the club moved north of the Thames to Highbury in North London. Arsenal has won 13 league titles and a record number of FA Cups, and since 2006 has played at the Emirates Stadium. The nickname “The Gunners” honors its armaments-factory origins.

Arsenal Logo Meaning and History

The cannon is the heart of Arsenal’s identity — a direct link to the Royal Arsenal munitions factory whose workers founded the club. As a key product of that factory, the cannon symbolizes strength, discipline, and the industrial heritage of Woolwich. The current crest, introduced in 2002, presents a gold cannon facing east on a red shield beneath the club name.

Arsenal Logo Evolution

• 1886–1930s — Early badges feature monograms and artillery motifs; in the 1930s Chapman introduces an Art Deco “AFC” badge at Highbury.
• 1967 — A white cannon begins appearing regularly on the shirts, becoming the enduring on-field symbol.
• 2002 — The modern shield crest arrives: a red shield with a gold east-facing cannon in sans-serif type.
• 2011–12 — For the 125th anniversary, an all-white crest adds 15 oak and 15 laurel leaves with the motto “Forward.”
• 2021–22 — The cannon-only crest returns on the away kit — first time since 1991 — now used across all three kits.
