About Atlanta Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons are a professional American football team based in Atlanta, competing in the NFL’s NFC South division. Founded on June 30, 1965, when the NFL awarded a franchise to Rankin Smith Sr. for a then-record $8.5 million, the Falcons joined the league as an expansion team in 1966. The nickname was suggested by Julia Elliott, a schoolteacher from Griffin, Georgia, who wrote that the falcon is proud and dignified, with great courage and fight. The team has appeared in two Super Bowls — XXXIII in the 1998 season and LI in the 2016 season — and has played at Mercedes-Benz Stadium since 2017 under owner Arthur Blank.

Atlanta Falcons Logo Meaning and History

The Falcons logo depicts a stylized falcon in attack position, its wings swept back as it dives for prey — a direct illustration of Elliott’s never-drops-its-prey description. The aggressive bird mark captures speed and predatory precision, and its red, black, and silver palette gives the team one of the boldest identities in the NFL.
