About Zune
Zune was Microsoft’s brand of digital-media products and services, marketed from November 2006 until its discontinuation in 2012. The line of portable media players — developed with Toshiba and launched November 14, 2006 — was Microsoft’s answer to Apple’s iPod, complemented by the Zune Marketplace and the Zune Music Pass subscription service. Despite a loyal following and the acclaimed Zune HD of 2009, market share stayed low; Microsoft discontinued all Zune hardware in October 2011 and replaced the services with Xbox Music in 2012. Zune’s text-driven interface later influenced the Metro design language of Windows Phone.
Zune Logo Meaning and History
“Zune” is a coined brand word — short, distinctive, and ownable. The logo was a clean lowercase wordmark embodying the Metro design principles of typography-first interfaces: honest text, generous whitespace, no ornament. It looked like the future in 2006, even if the market ultimately chose otherwise.
Zune Logo Evolution
- 2006 — The lowercase wordmark debuted with the first 30GB Zune player on November 14, 2006.
- 2009 — The identity fronted the Zune HD, the touchscreen flagship with an OLED display.
- 2011–2012 — The mark wound down with hardware in October 2011 and services in 2012, living on through Metro’s influence on Windows Phone.
